Thanksgiving Around the Corner

ThanksgivingDinner

In a few weeks, households across the U.S. will be preparing one of the largest dinners of the year — Thanksgiving dinner. As they are stuffing the turkey and setting the table, fire safety isn’t usually what is at the top of people’s minds.

Cooking is the leading cause of residential building fires, with Thanksgiving being the peak day followed by Christmas Day & Christmas Eve. An estimated 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings are reported to U.S. fire departments each year and cause an estimated $21 million in property loss.

Thanksgiving Day fires occur most frequently in the afternoon hours from 12 to 4pm, peaking from noon to 1pm, when many are preparing Thanksgiving dinner. Inform your policyholders of fire safety while cooking. The LiveSafe Foundation has an Educational Cookbook for Community Fire Safety that includes recipes to help reduce cooking fires. Download it now: EducationalCookbook_FireSafety_LifeSafeFoundation.
