Black Ice – Stay Safe

Winter is far from over and we wanted to share some warnings about road travel. According to the Federal Highway Administration, more than 116,000 injuries and 1,300 fatalities occur in auto accidents on snowy or icy roads each year.

A common cause for these accidents is “black ice”, which looks like wet blacktop.

  • Black ice is most likely to form when there’s a sudden temperature drop.
  • Be prepared if there’s an absence of water spray from other cars on what seems to be a wet road.
  • Be alert when approaching the common problem areas—bridges and overpasses.
  • Never use cruise control when road conditions are uncertain or changing.
  • Don’t rely on all-wheel drive for ice—it won’t help you gain traction.
